Ski – Snowboard Colorado – Aspen and Snowmass

Ski vacation and Snowboard travelers alike agree that the Aspen and Snowmass, Colorado resort areas are considered some of the world’s ultimate ski destinations. The Rocky Mountains surrounding Aspen and Snowmass boast some of the best skiing on earth, along with a rich history. Vacationers can take in festivals, sporting events, concerts, restaurants, and Après-ski venues, making the area a mega-destination that is flocked to during the winter season.

Aspen and Snowmass are some of Colorado’s premier ski resort towns. When snow falls on the more than 4,500 acres of skiable terrain spread over four area mountains, Aspen and Snowmass explode into a white-capped wonderland of skiing, snowboarding, and outdoor winter fun for all ages and abilities. Travelers fill the Aspen Snowmass Lodging to capacity!

The history of the area is derived from a small mining town, until a small group of visionaries and entrepreneurs realized the value of the town’s other inexhaustible resource – the snow! Since then, the villages of Aspen and Snowmass have grown into one of the top ski destinations in the world. The transition from mining to mountain resort started in 1947. Aspen ski vacation resorts and hotels were opened, and the town grew to the Aspen so many skiers love today.

Want to get in on the ultimate experience of skiing the Aspen and Snowmass area? Here is a brief overview of the four ski resorts.:

Snowmass: This giant resort mountain is comprised of a complex landscape of peaks, ridges, open slopes and gullies that provide some of the greatest ski and snowboard terrain in the area. From the gentle beginners slope of Fanny Hill to the wide cruising trails of the Big Burn, plus a number of black diamond runs, skiers of all levels will fall in love with Snowmass. State-of-the-art instruction programs and slope-side facilities and restaurants abound at Snowmass ski resort.

Aspen Highlands: A locals favorite, Aspen Highlands isn’t caught up in tourism hype typical of the Rocky Mountain ski mecca. This place is about skiing Aspen, period. A simple “steep and deep” philosophy makes the Highlands a true local hangout. But just because it is low-key by Hollywood standards, doesn’t mean it isn’t tough. In fact, Aspen Highlands is consistently ranked as having some of most challenging vertical descents in the United States. No fear – Aspen Highlands ski resort has a number of entry-level slopes with a series of green circles, and runs below Merry-Go-Round. Best of all, you will typically see fewer than 1,000 fellow skiers spread across the 790 acres of ski able terrain.

Aspen Mountain: This Aspen, Colorado ski resort is legendary for Snowcat skiing on the backside of the mountain, a favorite of expert skiers and snowboarders alike. Aspen Mountain’s groomed slopes are perfect for intermediate skiers; but if you’re up for a real challenge, Aspen Mountain has some of the valleys best jumps, bumps and extreme runs in the area!

Buttermilk Mountain: This is the smallest of the four ski resorts in the Roaring Fork Valley, but don’t let its size fool you. Buttermilk boasts a challenging 430 acres of ski and snowboard terrain, and a vertical rise of over two thousand feet. With some of the best skiing in the region, this Aspen ski resort commands attention. Buttermilk distinguishes itself with a variety of low-key terrain that offers great skiing for families and novice skiers. About seventy-five percent of Buttermilk’s terrain is dedicated to beginners and intermediates. Even so, expert skiers respect the more difficult challenges that Buttermilk Mountain has to offer.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned skier, you’ll find a challenging, rewarding and exciting winter ski and snowboard vacation at any one of the Colorado ski resorts in the Aspen – Snowmass area.

The Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale Sports Car

The Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale – A close look at this classic sports car’s performance, technical data, features, comparing rivals, history, used prices.

From Classic to Modern

THE CAR

The Challenge Stradale sports car was introduced by Ferrari in 1999, alongside the launch of the 360 Modena and Spider.

The Stradale was the highest performing, road-going variant in the 360 Series.

It was the successor to the 355 Challenge sports car whose development reached a peak in 1998 with the Evolution variant, which was an almost complete factory assembled race car.

The 360 Challenge was based on the 360 Modena, and was a limited edition racer that was designed by Ferrari to spend 20% of its time as a track day racer, and the remaining 80 % as a road-going sports car.

The Challenge Stradale was as much as 110 kg lighter than the basic 360 Modena as a result of a number of weight-saving measures, which included:

  • Removing the radio
  • Substituting the window glass with Plexiglass
  • Using Alcantara fabric in place of the leather interior
  • Reducing the weight of the bumpers and skirts by using special moldings
  • Removing the interior sound deadening material
  • Using carbon fibre mirrors
  • Adding the optional carbon fibre seats from the Modena

These changes produced a weight saving of 94 kg.

Fitted with 19 inch road wheels, a further 16 kg was saved by using Brembo brakes, made from a carbon composite material, which both prevented brake fade and improved handling due to the reduced weight,

The engine, body panels, and chassis were all constructed from aluminium.

When using the standard six speed F1-style paddle shift gear change system, the driver could throw a switch and select either Sport or Race-mode.

In the case of the latter, when the traction control was switched off, there was a feature that allowed the driver to engage a high performance start, so long as the prevailing driving conditions allowed the car to develop sufficient grip.

The chassis of the Stradale had been designed so that the centre of gravity was 15 mm lower than the standard car.

All non-essential interior fitments, such as carpeting and mats had been removed, and the door panels were constructed from carbon fibre.

It used lightweight aluminium roll-over bars behind the seats that were designed specifically for the car, and was fitted with stiffer springs and adjustable computer controlled damping.

With a modified carbon fibre under-tray, down force was further increased the harder the car was driven.

THE ENGINE

The 360 Challenge was powered by the same mid-engined, 3.6 litre, V8 unit, with five valves per cylinder, as the other 360 variants, and developed 425 bhp at 8500 rpm, and 275 ft/lbs of torque at 4750 rpm.

This produced a top speed of 186 mph, and a 0-62 mph time of 4.0 secs.

Output was increased by using high compression combustion chambers with polished ports, and raising the compression slightly to 11.2:1.

The total weight of the engine and gearbox was reduced by 11 kg by using a shorter, lightweight, stainless steel sports rear exhaust box, and modified outlet pipes.

COMPETITION

Typical competition for the 360 Challenge Stradale included the following: Lamborghini Murcielago, and Dodge Viper SRT-10. Ferrari performance:

SPORTS CARS FOR SALE

With an original price of $195,000, on the second hand market, a Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale that was in good condition would fetch around $160,000, whilst an example in showroom condition would command in the region of $320,000.

Another one of these classic cars from Ferrari.

This marks the end of my Review of the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale sports car

Why Sports are Good For You – And It’s About Much More Than Keeping Fit

Sport is good for you – and it’s not just about keeping fit. We already know, and we’re told by many eminent people that regular exercise is good for us.

But as somebody who plays sport regularly I’ve learnt that it is about much more than just the physical exercise. We’ll start with some widely accepted views. First doing regular exercise helps your vital organs. Getting the heart pumping, the lungs working deeply and the legs or arm muscles working hard helps improve the strength and stamina that we have. This in turn helps us fight other diseases more effectively and stay generally healthy. Also of course if you play competitive sport regularly, you are more likely to have a mental attitude which is more combative, and you will fight back.

The second key fact is that sport is a key way of losing weight or keeping weight off. Doing some exercise that leaves you breathless (no, apart from that) will ultimately help burn fat. Remember that at first it will probably hurt a bit: console yourself with the old adage “no pain, no gain.” And you know the arguments about not putting on weight. Being lighter puts less strain on your muscles and your heart, so you are likely to have less pain in your joints, and a stronger heart, and you live longer!

So what else? Sport is good for your soul too. Just by playing, or taking part in an active sport often means you commit yourself to doing things at set times with other people. So if you play football, you’ll need to turn up on time to train or play matches. If you play tennis, badminton or squash, you will arrange games with others. And if you go running or to the gym it is a great idea to do it with someone else. It simply makes you more committed. If you’ve already committed and you’ve had a heavy day at work and you don’t really want to go out and exercise tonight, you are more likely to do it anyway if you’ve agreed to meet another person. I’ve spoken to many other people (and I experience this myself) who say that after you’ve taken your exercise and you’ve had a shower and a drink, you always feel much better, and the troubles of your day seem to melt away. It is a great mental detox. It is easier to put your troubles back in their box, and get things into proportion more. So as I said, it is good for the soul – the busier and more stressful your day, the more you need this to balance out your life.

Playing sport with another person or people also gets things into proportion for another reason too. It is easy during downtime at the end of the day to dwell on things that have happened during the day, and in these challenging times to feel down or frustrated. But you know that the other person or people don’t want to hear about it – so quite simply you don’t burden them with your woes. You focus on something else – hopefully something that you have in common, and which is more positive. This is a good thing for your soul, your mental condition and it helps achieve a better work life balance.

We all say we want a good work life balance but this is one easy and important part of achieving that. Here endeth the lesson! Above all, seek out things you can enjoy in life and have fun!

Sports Psychology For Bowlers – How to Avoid Choking and Bowl in the Zone

Over the years, I have counseled many bowlers. I have showed them how they can get into the zone before they release their ball and roll it down the lane. I also teach them what they can do when they
get nervous, lose their confidence and start to feel themselves slipping out of the zone.

Bowlers, like shooters and archers really can control the outcome of their performances. The only variable they have to contend with once they dial into the zone is the differences between the two lanes which they are competing on. As all bowlers know, lanes have different tracks and different breaks and the amount of oil on the surface can vary from one lane to another.

Also, unlike some other sports they are not competing directly against their opponents and they can not control what their opponents might do. They can, however, control the relationship between themselves, the ball, the lane and the pins.

Bowlers who I coach, master the art of placing themselves into a state of mind which we call "the zone." This "zone" resembles a hypnotic state where the athlete is totally absorbed in what he or she is trying to do with the ball and with their bodies. He or she is confident, focused and relaxed. They are zeroed in on their spot or their line. They tend to be optimistic and believe that their bowling dreams and goals can become realities. The release of the ball is effortless and automatic and they don't have to think too much about it. While in the zone, bowlers find it easy to replicate their stroke over and over again. They get into a machine like rhythm.

Choking can be thought of as being the opposite of being in the zone. I do all I can to help bowlers avoid this dreaded state of mind and I teach them techniques to manage choking if they start to lose their confidence and focus or if they become too tense to perform to their potential.

For instance, some bowlers have to change what they think and what they say to themselves prior to stepping on the lane. Some need to change their target. Frequently, when bowlers feel the pressure, they speed up their approach a bit. This can damage their timing, their leverage, their accuracy and their score.

Typically, bowlers begin to combat choking by learning one simple technique or by making one simple change which gets their mind and their body away from choking and on to the right path for performing to their potential.

Learning how to avoid choking and how to bounce back after a bad frame or a bad ball are essential skills for people who want to bowl at a high level.

Proper Massage Assessment Always Includes Evaluating The Client's Footwear

For massage therapists and manual clinicians proper orthopedic assessment is key. That means thinking beyond our original training at times, and using what we know about specific populations to our advantage. The following are some observations and questions you should be asking runners during clinic.

Whenever you are performing a assessment ALWAYS find out what kind of shoe they are wearing. It will give you clues to what kind of problems they have.

Many runners get into the sport because all they need is a pair of shoes and themselves. Because of this, they often neglect maintenance care until there is a problem, then book shorter appointments looking for a quick fix. Because of this your time management and home-care instructions will be particularly important. Part of this ethos comes from the fact that although running is healthy, and improves the quality of life, acquired overuse injuries take a long time to show up, therefore runners are lulled into a false sense of confidences that they are fine, whereas they are really experiencing micro-traumas.

Recently there has been a trend in barefoot running. Then that moved to minimalist running. In the last 10 years shoes had become very expensive and structured, with a large heel. As running popularity boomed, and injuries became more prevalent, many of them were blamed their injuries on shoe structure, claiming that their injury was arising from the fact that the shoes' structure was training the feet to be weaker. As a backlash there was a pull to barefoot running, which was all the rage until, of course more injuries were reported as millions hit the pavement with little or no training or prep for running barefoot. Neither method is right or wrong. It really depends on your foot and personal biomechanics. Running in a traditional shoe with loads of padding means you are going to hit the ground heel first, and that the long-term effects of running for this wearer will likely be impact related problems in the knees, low back, and hips, including stress fractures as it travels straight up the body on impact. Running barefoot means you are using the leg and foot biomechanically as a spring and shock absorber. Force zigzags up the muscles rather than the bones, making the tendons and muscles more prone to wear and overloading that leads to overuse conditions such as plantar fasciitis and tendonitis. Most runners are now in a mid-foot shoe, which is a blend of the two.

So whenever you are performing assessment ALWAYS find out what kind of shoe they are wearing.

Video Game Streaming – The New Frontier!

Video gaming has always been a competitive sport. Arcade boxes earlier had their pixelated high score charts, and every kid wanted to be the one with the top scores in his neighborhood. With the internet explosion and the release of iconic first person shooter games like Doom and Counter Strike, players from all over the world began to come together. In 1997, one of the first e-sports organizations, Cyberathelete Professional League was established. Since then the gaming world has leaped forward to online gaming and streaming. Let us take a closer look at the phenomenon.

The Rise of Online Gaming and Streaming

In the past four decades, online gaming has become one of the world's biggest entertainment industries. According to reports from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the global online gaming industry in 2010 was worth around $ 56 billion! This is bigger than both the magazine or the music industry and about two-thirds the film industry's size. According to a 2011 report by Entertainment Software Association, the average age of a gamer in the United States is 37 and 42 percent of these gamers are female.

One of the biggest trends today, in live streaming is not music (as you might have previously assumed), but competitive gaming. e-sports today, attracts thousands of viewers. A number of sites today, catering specifically to gamers and their fans stream e-sport events. Several e-sport websites have exploded all over the internet as live webcasts take competitive video gaming to a completely new level, transforming it into a sport that is viewed by millions from one which was limited to just insiders.

Video Game Streaming: The Big Players

Among the big players in video game streaming today are Own3D.tv and TwitchTV. Own3D.tv began online video game streaming in 2010, and at present, the website gets over four million unique viewers a month for video game live streams. In March 2011, Electronic Sports League (ESL), the world's largest gaming league, broadcasted the Intel Extreme Masters event, which is among the most popular gaming tournaments of the year, through Own3D. With $ 400,000 as prize money, the gaming tournament drew 75,000 simultaneous live viewers on single event days, while the overall audience reached several million gamers. June 2011 saw over 200,000 concurrent viewers watching a Dreamhack contest (which is based around League of Legends, another popular game) on Own3D, with about 250 GBps of traffic through the event.

And live video streaming vendor Justin.tv witnessed e-sports video streaming grow at such a rapid rate that they dedicated an entire website to it. In June 2011, they launched TwitchTV after video game streaming reached around 3.2million monthly unique views on its main website. TwitchTV now engages over 12 million unique viewers each month. Also it has had a steady month over month growth rate of 11 percent since it was launched. Besides that, TwitchTV has over 1,000 premium partners. It has also received over 80,000 downloads of its iPhone mobile app in less than a month of the app's launch. Between October 10th and October 16th the website received massive traffic as can be seen from the following figures:

Total Hours Watched: 6,737,250

Weekly Unique Viewers: 4,214,057

Total Hours Watched per Unique Viewer: 1.6

Weekly Unique Chatters: 309,220

Peak Concurrent Viewers on a Single Stream: 125,862

Peak Concurrent Viewers on all Gaming Content: 165,250

Video Game Streaming: Popular Genres

Here are some of the most popular genres in live online video game streaming:

Adventure (Assassin's Creed II, Lego, Lost Planet)
Strategy (StarCraft II, Total War, Worms)
Sport Games (FIFA, NBA 2K10, MLB 2K10)
Shooter (Modern Warfare 3, Bad Company 2, Left 4 Dead 2)
Role-Playing (Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age)
Racing (Need for Speed: The Run Playthrough Part 1 !, GP2 Asia Series 2011)
Simulation (The Sims)
Massively multiplayer online role-playing game – MMORPG (World of Warcraft, Hydra 9)

Streaming Games Online: The Legal Side

By now you might know or at least heard about the new bill related to anti-streaming video – S.978. At present, it is not illegal to stream, for instance a walk-through of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 online as it is considered to be a public performance. However, a bill like this would make such …

2nd Birthday Party Themes – 9 Ideas For a Fun Theme For Your Child’s Second Birthday

Are you looking for ideas for your child’s second birthday party? For an easy to create event that delights your toddler’s senses, try building it around a theme. Here are nine fun themes to help you plan your little one’s celebration.

1. Bubbles – Decorate with clear helium balloons, placemats made of bubble wrap, and start up the bubble machine. You can buy an inexpensive battery operated one or splurge and rent the commercial kind. Every child responds to blowing, breaking, chasing and watching bubbles.

Small wading pools with rubber duckies are optional.

2. Sports – Of course, your two year old is not actually rooting for his favorite team. But if he likes being around Dad when he watches the game, then this birthday theme might be the one to capture his enthusiasm. In fact, Dad might be interested in helping with ideas and even offer his sports equipment, baseball cards and team jerseys for decorating.

3. Princess – or Prince – Yes, your little one is definitely destined for royalty and easily rules your heart. Celebrate that fact with this theme. You can keep it simple with paper crowns or go all out with fake jewel tiaras, dressing up like monarchy and building a play castle out of boxes for the event.

4. Construction – If your 2 year old likes to dig or gets excited when he sees a dump truck, bulldozer or back hoe, then this party will make him happy. Arrange to have a pile of dirt or sand deposited in your yard or driveway. But be sure to warn the parents to dress their kids in old clothes. Add orange cones from the home improvement store, toy construction trucks, shovels and pails and you’re in business.

5. Teddy Bears – If someone “beary” special is turning two, then this is a good choice. You can have a teddy bear tea, picnic or parade. Have each guest bring a stuffed animal friend. Every child’s bear can win a prize: one for the fuzziest, another for the cutest, most cuddly, biggest or smallest. Don’t forget to serve the Teddy Grahams.

6. Under the Sea – Make a wall of blue balloons to resemble water. Add fishing nets and inflatable fish to decorate. Offer gold fish crackers as a snack. This party can also be tied into Sponge Bob, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo or Shark Tale.

7. Planes, Trains and Automobiles – Maybe your child responds with exhilaration whenever he sees an airplane overhead or a train zipping by. It might be fire trucks or racing cars that capture his attention. So if you notice that he likes these things, you can build the whole birthday party around the vehicles of his choice.

8. Animals – If your child goes crazy when he or she sees a fuzzy critter, then this is a great theme party idea. You could feature one animal, such as cats, dogs or monkeys. Another choice would be to make it about a whole category of animals, like those from the farm or the jungle. Take the group of kids to a petting zoo or farm. Or you can have it at home with face painting and dressing up the kids to look like their favorite critter.

9. Dinosaurs – This is a favorite of kids of all ages. Decorate with green crepe or craft paper streamers, hung in various lengths to look like you’re in the jungle. Add construction paper dinosaur prints all over the house. Use dinosaur toys or cut out pictures to complete the look. You could even provide a sandbox dig for dinosaur bones or eggs for all the budding paleontologists.

Simply pay attention to what your toddler reacts to with enthusiasm. If you choose a theme that features something your little one really likes, then he’s sure to have a wonderful time at his second birthday party. Though he may not quite remember the celebration, you will take tons of photos, which will serve as a lasting reminder of your love. And isn’t that what the fuss is all about?
